Congratulations to our partners at Oregon State University and Andersen Construction on the groundbreaking of their new state-of-the-art complex focused around research, testing and collaboration. The Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex will harness one of the nation's most powerful supercomputers and team-based research in artificial intelligence, materials science and robotics to solve global challenges in areas such as climate science, oceanography, sustainability and water resources. We look forward to working alongside our partners at Andersen Construction and Affiliated Engineers, Inc. on the mechanical and plumbing for this cross-laminated timber (CLT) facility.
We celebrated the groundbreaking of the Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex yesterday. The center will employ a NVIDIA supercomputer to support faculty in addressing highly complex and challenging computational problems. The OSU supercomputer – powered by the latest NVIDIA CPUs, GPUs and networking – is expected to be among the world’s fastest and will help foster team-based research in artificial intelligence to advance global solutions using our expertise in robotics, climate science, clean energy and biotechnology and integrated health. The complex was made possible by two $50 million gifts from the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation and OSU alumni couple Jensen Huang, ‘84, ‘09 (Hon. Ph.D.), NVIDIA founder and CEO, and his spouse Lori, ‘85, who is president of their family's foundation. We were delighted to welcome the Huangs to campus for the groundbreaking and to celebrate their transformative gift. Govenor Tina Kotek also gave remarks at the event. We are grateful to the state legislature for supporting the complex with $72 million in capital bonds for the building’s construction. Jensen told the gathering, “I believe that through this visionary project, we’re creating the conditions by which amazing researchers could do their life’s work here, and make a real impact for the rest of society, for the future of the planet. To tackle the most worthwhile, the most consequential breakthroughs that the world needs.” The creation of the Huang Complex has inspired additional support for faculty, staff, students and programs associated with the project, including the recently announced $20 million gift from Judy, ‘65, and Mike Gaulke, ‘68, to establish the Gaulke Center for Marine Innovation and Technology. The groundbreaking was followed by an insightful Global Futures Forum with Jensen and OSU President Jayathi Murthy. We’ll post a recap of the forum this week!
